As Jersey’s new Director of Children’s Safeguarding and Care, I’m writing to invite you to join our exciting journey to deliver outstanding practice and outcomes, develop our services and to create new ways of working.

Thank you for your interest in working in a unique safeguarding and care system that, itself, serves a unique set of communities in a unique island setting.

We want to be honest with you about the nature of the opportunities to work in Jersey for the Children’s Service. We need brilliant social workers and social work managers but we need this to be right both for our children and for you. 

You will have heard about the historic failings of the Jersey Government and society more widely to protect its children. The past abuse, neglect and suffering of hundreds of children, over 75 years, which was laid bare in 2017 by the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, is unforgivable. Nearly three years on, the prioritisation and investment required to protect children is much better understood.

We have a comprehensive plan to enable confident, restorative, rights and relationship based practice, to build a stable and skilled workforce and to deliver the right services at the right time, together with our partners.

I need talented, creative people like you to move to our island and join in the great work already being done to improve the care, welfare and status of our children and help shape our future.

But, make no mistake, this will be a challenge and one you’re unlikely to face anywhere in the British Isles. You’ll be working in a different culture, with different legislative and operational frameworks. While the salary and tax regime will definitely attract you, compared to the non-metropolitan areas of the UK and Europe, the cost of living is high and accommodation choices are constrained. But the island is stunningly beautiful and it is one of the safest places to live and work.

And there is scope to be really creative - caseloads are low, resources are relatively high, partner agencies are all within walking distance and the Island is relationship-based by definition. You’ll have the time and space to give each child the love, thought and response they deserve.

Together we will develop the perfect conditions to enable children and young people to flourish, and ensure that excellent social work flourishes; a world in which social workers can exercise their professional discretion and judgement and feel proud of their work and profession.
